Retainers

Retainers are critical to maintaining that confident and beautiful smile after you’ve had your braces removed or undergone orthodontic treatment. There are several types of retainers that your orthodontist may suggest but the most commonly used are the Essix or Vivera retainers.

Essix Retainer

These retainers are used by most orthodontist. They are custom made in the office by taking impressions of your mouth and are given to patients on the day their braces are removed or used as a replacement option. They are clear, removable and easy to take in and out. You can get an upper, lower or 1 full set and with proper maintenance, they can last several years. While the instructions for the number of hours of required wear may vary from person to person, usually they are meant to be worn at night and a few hours during the day, at least at the beginning.

Vivera Retainers

Are custom made clear, virtually invisible retainers that are made with the same state-of-the-art technology used to make Invisalign. You do not have to be a previous wearer of Invisalign to get these and they are 2 times more durable and 30% stronger than the retainers you receive in the office from your orthodontist after your braces are removed. In addition, they are less likely to crack, break, or discolor compared to other clear retainers and are more comfortable to wear.

To get them, we don’t need to make impressions of your teeth. Instead, Invisalign uses its latest 3D imaging technology to create a custom and precise fit for you. Lastly, you get 4 sets (a total of 8 retainers) that last several years with good care before you’ll need a replacement and you will always have a backup in the event you lose one. Long term Vivera’s are the most affordable option!

Hawley Retainer

Is a removable wire retainer made of metal and acrylic to fit the roof of your mouth. The attached metal wire runs across the outside of your teeth to maintain alignment and it can be adjusted for a better fit or if there is slight movement after your braces come off.

Fixed Retainer

Consists of a solid wire that is bond to the backside of your lower front teeth.  Although they are not visible to others and can’t be lost but you do have to regularly clean and floss around them. Most are left in place indefinitely and can only be removed by a dentist or orthodontist.
